CHOOSING A PRESCHOOL

What makes a quality preschool?

Choosing a preschool is about more than a checklist. The strongest programs create a safe, engaging place where children are known well, encouraged to explore, and supported as they build the skills and confidence they will carry into kindergarten and beyond.

What matters most.

A quality preschool should support the whole child—thinking, language, movement, creativity, relationships, independence, and emotional growth.

Small groups matter.

Young children benefit from being known as individuals. ABC Time intentionally serves a small group of 6–8 preschoolers, giving Miss Felicia more opportunities for conversation, guidance, observation, and one-to-one attention throughout the day.

An experienced, consistent teacher.

Preschoolers thrive when the adult guiding them understands early childhood development and sees them every day. Learn more about Miss Felicia’s experience and teaching approach.

Play with purpose.

Play is how preschoolers test ideas, solve problems, use language, practice coordination, and make sense of the world. Art, science, sensory work, dramatic play, music, building, and outdoor exploration all have a place. See more on our Art & Science page.

Social and emotional growth.

Learning to join a group, express needs, take turns, handle frustration, build friendships, and grow in confidence are essential preschool skills. A strong program gives children room to practice those skills with patient adult support.

Readiness is more than academics.

Letters and numbers matter, but so do listening, fine-motor control, independence, routines, communication, curiosity, and confidence. Our approach prepares children for the whole kindergarten experience. Explore Kindergarten Readiness.

Families should feel connected.

Parents should know who is caring for their child, how the day is structured, what their child is working on, and how to raise questions. In a small preschool setting, direct communication between families and the teacher is a meaningful part of the experience.

What should parents look for on a preschool tour?

A tour should help you understand how the program feels in real life—not just what is written on a website.

✓ How does the teacher speak with and respond to children?

✓ Is the group size appropriate for individual attention?

✓ Do the spaces invite play, movement, creativity, and exploration?

✓ Is there a predictable daily rhythm with room for flexibility?

✓ How are social skills, independence, and kindergarten readiness supported?

✓ Can families communicate directly with the person teaching their child?

A SMALL PRESCHOOL BY DESIGN

See whether it feels right for your child.

ABC Time is a licensed home preschool in Carlsbad for children approximately ages 2½–5. Our small-group setting is designed to make room for close teacher relationships, hands-on learning, outdoor play, creativity, and the everyday social experiences that help young children grow.

The best way to decide whether a preschool is a good fit is to see the environment and meet the teacher in person.
